Here's a very interesting article about an Australian woman who claims to be the first foreign geisha in Japan. She's training in Asakusa (a-SAH-k-sa) and has some interesting things to say about Golden's "Something of a Geisha".
Sugoi !!! Omoshiroi ! I clicked on her webpage but there really is not enough info there. Is there more elsewhere? I wish we had had more time in Asakusa when we were there. Anyway, I hope she succeeds in setting the record straight about geisha, as I think most Westerners ESPECIALLY MEN prefer to think of them as beautiful "courtesans", or sophisticated talented (please excuse this deadful word) prostitutes. But this is the fault of films like the geisha movies, but perhaps also becasue of the sort of "geisha-like" women after WW 11(more than friendly) who got mixed up with the real geisha. I look forward to this woman's films/video, etc.
She seemed a bit bitter though, don't you think? I stumbled upon the article while searching for vocabulary for my classes. I'm sure there's more about her if you gooogle her. Her opinion didn't seem to mesh with the content of Autobiography of a Geisha, written by a former onsen geisha. Plus, how can she comment on pre-war geisha life? Interesting article, nonetheless.
